The following is a report of my activities for the week ending October 15, 2010.
I. YouTube - You're BARRED!
I work a lot on my computer. Most of the time I operate in a zone and am not aware of what's going on around me. From time to time (not very often), I'll log on to YouTube and play a few music videos. Chaka Khan ("Sweet Thing"). Beyonce ("If I Were a Boy;" "Halo"). Angela Bofill ("I Try"). Phyllis Hyman ("Old Friend" "You Know How to Love Me"). Stuff like that. I don't watch the videos. I merely have them playing behind the scenes as filler noise.
Last Tuesday, I was in the middle of practicing my new Dreamweaver skills (learned in my ongoing web design course) and listening to Anita Baker sing, "Angel," when all of the sudden, my cursor started jerking all over my computer screen. I thought I accidentally held down my shift key too long or was leaning on a character. But, I wasn't. Then it stopped jumping. I shook my head and returned to my DW lesson. By that time, the Anita Baker video was over and I went to the YouTube tab and pressed the "Replay" button so I could hear the song again. All was well for the next few minutes. THEN, the cursor began zooming across my computer screen. I tried shutting DW down but it wouldn't close. I did Ctrl, Alt + Del and that's when my entire computer screen turned upside down. The cursor was going wild. I couldn't select anything. Long story short, I powered off hoping that would stop whatever was trying to get on my system.
I rebooted. My screen was still upside down. I had a difficult time moving the cursor and selecting. However I was able to get to the Internet and download a malicious software removal program and run it on my computer. In the middle of the scanning, I had a light bulb moment and remembered the "system restore" option that is supposed to restore your system to a date prior to the attack.
So, I shut down the scanning and attempted a system restore. (Praying - a lot, too.)
It did not work. My desktop was still upside down, although the cursor was not as wild. I did an online search for a solution to my upside down screen and came up with:
Ctrl, Alt + up arrow
That worked.
Then I re-ran the virus software, which, after an hour long scan, claimed no viruses found.
I had to go to my j-o-b. So, I just powered off and hoped whatever was wrong would resolve itself overnight.
The following morning, I powered on and all seemed well. UNTIL, I began my morning blog hop and started getting new tab windows every time I scrolled down the screen or clicked on a link.
I was pissed. I started calculating the costs of taking my computer to a repair shop. Not something I could afford. Then I remember a long time ago when I had a virus and I spoke to an online tech guru and he told me about finding and deleting hidden files where viruses plant themselves.
Step 1: Double Click "My Computer"
Step 2: Double Click "C" Drive and select "Documents and Settings"
Step 3: Select the "Default User" folder, then "Local Settings" folder. (The Local Settings folder is going to be a hidden file. You have to unhide all hidden folders. To do so, go to "Tools" and select "Folder Options".
Go to the "View" tab and select "Show hidden files...")
Step 4: Open the "Local Settings" folder. You'll see a "Temporary Internet Files" folder. Open it and delete all files. Be sure to empty your "Recycle Bin."
Step 5: Reboot your machine.
So far, this has worked for me. So, what does this have to do with YouTube, you ask? Well, this is not the first time, funny things have happened on my computer while running a YouTube video. The previous time, I was actually watching the video and saw immediately that something was attempting to get on my system and I shut it down.
I did an online search and apparently, I am not the only person who has gotten viruses from YouTube.
Well, I'm not taking any more chances.

That's right, no more YouTube videos playing on my computer. Okay, maybe I'm being a little over dramatic. Now, if YouTube, can get the BBC to post full EastEnders episodes from the first season to present, I'll buy a YouTube-dedicated computer just to watch.
I've been watching since the 1st episode. I even visited the set.

II. My Pledge
I will be more diligent about running virus removal software weekly. Fortunately, I do have an external back-up drive. Also, so many Mac users claim to not have virus problems that I think I'll stop by the Mac store and check out a few machines.

I. Say What You Mean and Do What You Say.
This week I had a very frustrating experience. I was finalizing what was to become an upcoming online crafts class. I spent over an hour on the telephone with the party going over the details. By the time we ended the call we were both in mutual agreement. I started to put wheels in motion for sponsorship. Blah, blah, blah. Long story short, two days later I get a "I'm sorry...this isn't the right time for me..." email from the party. Blah, blah, blah.
I was pissed.
I didn't even bother to respond. Ugh.
Last year, one of the co-founders of a very successful online creative class company warned me that instructors tend to be flaky.
It's so annoying.
But, as with all things in "Judyville," I keep it moving. Next.
II. Don't You Hear Me Talking To You?
For the last three weeks I have sent proposal upon proposal to people/companies for various projects I am planning for VirtueRadioNetwork.com. Several of the recipients have gotten in touch and will be involved in the future. Great. Much appreciated.
Then there are the others. The ones who just pretend they don't hear me. The ones who blow me off.
Before you say, "Well, they don't owe you anything," consider that these people were beneficiaries of former things I had done for them.
And for the record, I don't have a problem with the word, "no." I actually prefer you to be direct and let me know where you stand. It's the silent treatment that gets the eye roll and clenched teeth. Explain to me, what's the big deal about a simple decline email?
And don't get me started about the short-term memory people I've done things for in the past.
Ugh.
Annoying.
III. Some Good News (Honest - No Bitterness Below)
My media credentials for the upcoming Adobe Max 2010 convention arrived.
I am very excited. I'm covering Adobe Max 2010 for a special week long WOMEN CREATE: Lessons in Business for Women video diary. The video diary will feature demonstrations of Adobe products every home-based (or otherwise) woman entrepreneur should know about. I'll also chat with industry experts about trends.
Adobe is the maker of Photoshop, Dreamweaver, Fireworks, Premiere Pro, Flash, After Effects and more.
IV. Farewell to a Gentleman
The day I received the email mentioned in Section 1 of this report, my spirit was so heavy. I actually prayed to God to release me from this VirtueRadioNetwork.com assignment.
"Just say it, God. Tell me to put this down. Speak plainly to me. And make it audible so there is no doubt that it is you. Just tell me that I don't have to do this anymore."
God hasn't gotten back to me yet.
However, the day after, I received a report that one of my all-time favorite television writers - Stephen J. Cannell - had passed away.
I met Mr. Cannell in the early 90's on a film set. He was extremely kind, funny, dapper and encouraging. A year or so later, I had the opportunity to work at Mr. Cannell's independent television production company. I had to decline because the pay was too low, especially in comparison to the money I was making at a large studio.
In hindsight, I probably should have taken the job.

He was a man who had every reason to give up but didn't. (He failed three grades before finishing high school.) He pressed on and found a way to make his dreams come true. In the process he entertained, comforted and inspired a generation via his television programs and novels.

But that's not what this post is about.
Since these accusations were revealed, a simple question keeps running through my mind: What about the women?
What about the women who unknowingly entrusted their sons to the "mentor" program in hopes of finding a positive male role model for their children?
What about the women who knew of this weakness, took advantage of it and in the process pimped their sons?

What about the women who are married to men with similar weaknesses, know about it and accept it provided their lifestyle does not change?
What about the women the accusers (and others like them) have or will have unprotected sex with (allegedly, one of the accusers has fathered a child)?
What about the women who worked at New Birth and who were fully aware these activities and did nothing?
What about the women - the feminists - who have planted a seed that fathers are not necessary?
What about the women in the church so blinded by the "good works," and the bling that they worship the man rather than God?
I was hoping that when I woke up on Sunday morning I would read that Bishop Long stood before his church and repented. For that, he would have gained my respect, forgiveness and prayers. However, this did not happen. (He didn't even bother to say he was innocent.) It was just another exercise of spiritual manipulation to maintain status quo.
I suspect a financial settlement is being drawn as I type. The boys will be paid off. The story will be buried. Business will return to normal with one exception - they will be more careful.

I. A New Record
VirtueRadioNetwork.com has been updated. I actually got the site up with only a 2-day delay. Not bad. Normally, I'm at least a week late. Here's a peak at some of this month's content:
I am learning so much in my web design class. For several years I made excuses as to why I should not take this course. Money, lack of time, could teach myself, money. Now that I am almost 2-weeks deep, I realize that some things you just have to pay for. Should pay for. Although, taking this course is putting a squeeze on my budget, I know it will benefit me long term. So you'll hear (or read) no grumblings from me.
III. The "B" Word
Guess what was in my inbox this week? An e-newsletter I subscribe to had an interesting guest article this week. It was on creative burnout. Yes, the "B" word, b-u-r-n-o-u-t. Symptoms: (a) you can't remember the day of the week; (b) all you want to do is stay in bed, eat potato chips and watch "24" on Netflix; (c) you're pissed off a lot; and (d) you just want to get a steady job that pays the bills, lets you eat out and go to the movies once in a while, and own a condo at the beach. Oops, am I telling on my self?
I've actually been planning a WOMEN CREATE episode on burnout. But, funny thing, no one wants to talk about it. Perhaps we don't like admitting that we can't do it all. I'm always amazed at how some people are able to post on Twitter or Facebook all day long. I'm like, don't they have a life? I can barely post a single blog entry each week. It used to make me feel like I was doing something wrong. But then I learned that most of them hire virtual assistants to do their social media or worse, some actually don't have a life. Well, I intend to write my own status updates and blog posts. However, I won't jeopardize my health to do it. So, you get it when you get it.

I. Stepping Up My Game
I'm heading back to school. For the next 12 weeks I'll be pursuing a web design certificate at a local university. Class starts today. It will include beginning/intermediate/advanced html, Flash, Fireworks and more. I'm also taking Photoshop.
It's time for me to step up my game. I'm ready, willing, able, and going for it.
II. Other News
I took a vacation. My first in nearly 3 years. All of my computers stayed home.
